Dave's Market Update - 07.02.17
IN FRUIT
Lots of new fruit available this week. We are seeing the tail end of the mango season and as our traditional varieties go out of season, the later mangoes commence. The Palmer mangoes are the pick of these, but some of our shops at least in the early part of the week will have Foleys special mangoes or Silky mangoes left over, the Silkys have been the best mango I have eaten since Christmas. Sweet juicy figs are flowing into the market but there has been quite bit of heat damage here and they will just get better as the record temperatures we have been experiencing subside.
In berries, this is the month for blackberries and my wife and I, Cathy enjoyed them today for breakfast. This berry is quite different from the old traditional and sometimes tart blackberries from our childhood, these are plump, luscious, sweet fruit. The intense heat makes the Aussie Valencia oranges go green, but be assured they are just as sweet and juicy as ever.
Lovely crunchy crisp fresh new season galas are the apple to buy and for something a little different I love the sweet little sultana grapes that are around for the next three or four weeks. If you love cherries this is probably the last week for the Tassie fruit, enjoy it while you can.
New seasons Williams pears are trickling in, they look a little immature to me and should be better next week. Lots of excellent plums underway, we have some rather small Black Ambers from Young this week that are cheap (because of their size) but are fantastic eating. Those very sweet sugar plums are also arriving in large quantities. Lots of these now go export to Asia where they love anything sweet.
IN VEGETABLEYet again, not a lot happening on the vegetable side of the business. Intense heat is never good for our product and so a lot of stock is being dumped at the farm level. What we are seeing is some extraordinary bargains in imperfect picks, where the product doesn’t make the cut as our premium lines yet it is perfect to eat, just a bit ugly. So damage to tomato crops in Victoria will see imperfect tomatoes back in store by this weekend. Eggplant, zucchini and potatoes are all great value here for this week.
