Our Regen Partner: Mulloon Creek Natural Farm

A double act:Â digging a niche in the healthy soils space.Â
Mulloon Creek Natural Farms (MCNF) and The Mulloon Institute (TMI) are two stories with a common plotline. We both follow nature to grow resilient rural communities. At TMI, we wear an education-advocate hat. We test Regen agricultural practices and collect the data to grow sustainable Australian farming. Set between Canberra and the coast is MCNF – the productive ‘living campus’ of the Institute; a demo of Regen land management. Â
Before his passing in 2018, Regen farmer, Tony Coote AM, restored landscapes for over 40 years. He transformed unproductive land into full-of-life ecosystems and turned MCNF into an environmental triumph. Â
Tony leaves a compelling legacy: thriving soils and waterways, abundant plantlife and happier humans and animals. Â
Furthering the Regen journey, Tony founded TMI in 2011. Working with international practitioners, we implement MCNF’s holistic approach to land management. Sowing collaborative seeds, we team up with academics and universities to research Regen agriculture and collect vital evidence.Â
Bringing ground-breaking research results, education tools and programs, we visit Australian farmers. To counter climate and environmental change, we champion adaptive agriculture practices and share ways to harmonise farming and the environment.Â
Healthy plant growth = nutrient-rich food = healthy humans and ecosystems = clean water and air. Taking cues from nature to manage soils, creeks, pastures and animals – Regen practices close the loop.Â
Mulloon Creek Natural Farms eggs have been a customer-favourite at Harris Farm since 2010. As a chief Regen partner, all profits from our eggs fund TMI. So, in an eggshell – by buying our eggs, you’re laying the foundation for on-farm Regen. Our farm is a free-range home to our hens. With less than 250 birds per hectare: that’s a whole lot of space to do their thing. Because our hens are happy and well-fed, their organic, biodynamic, pasture-raised eggs are off-the-charts fresh and tasty.Â
All our animals are free to go about their natural business. We’re all about holistic grazing principles and pasture cropping with no-till seeding or paddock ploughing.Â
On MCNF, agroforestry is alive; behold our biodiverse tree plantings and an on-site arboretum. We integrate our animals, so they work in step with crops and stock. And seeding our paddocks with an eight species minimum, we love to mix it up. Â
Our certified, biodynamic practices range from natural compost and field preparations to planet rhythms and constellations. And we rely on the biodynamic smarts of educator and practitioner, Hamish Mackay, to help make our pastures more productive.Â
We keep pest plants at bay with organic methods like slashing, composting, fertilising and natural urine application. No chemical pesticides, glyphosate or herbicides. With waste compost and compost teas, we top up fertility.Â
Following keyline design, water and fertility move along contour channels. Natural sequence farming restores mini wetlands to capture and store water. And we only use natural fertilisers, like rock minerals and seaweed extracts.Â
Our Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV) verifies our permanent agriculture concepts and organic principles. This means our farm's ecological health is on the rise: hurrah.Â
