We asked our current Regen suppliers how they got on the bandwagon and what sources shone a light to show them the way. Take this DIY Regenerative Agriculture journey to get up to scratch on why we’re putting our momentum behind this movement. If you’re a producer, grower, farmer or an all-round healthy food and farm fan, take a leaf from the folks already in this space. We learnt a lot – now it’s your turn. Here’s their all-medium list of top tips and resources to get you in the Regen Ag headspace.
- Who started Regenerative Agriculture? Some would argue it was the Rodale Institute. But we’ve got our homegrown Regen Farming legend: Charles Massy. Give his book Call of the Weed Warbler a read or listen. It’s the biological farming bible that’s inspired most, if not all our Regen Suppliers.
- Watch the ABC Landline profile on Charles Massy; he’s the Grandfather of Regen.
- Want more wise words? Add these books to your growing nightstand stack: Dark Emu by Bruce Pascoe or any book written by Joel Salatin, Gabe Brown, Matthew Evans or Rudolf Steiner.
- If workshops are more your jam, these two come highly recommended. A biodynamic workshop with Boorowa-based beef producer, Charlie Arnott. Or a Queensland-based biofertiliser workshop with Kym and Georgie Kruse.
- Put your feet up for the Netflix documentary, Kiss the Ground; it’s one of those ‘tell your friends about it’ docos.
- Can’t get to one of his workshops? Wrap your ears around Charlie Arnott’s podcast, The Regenerative Journey. Each episode, Charlie chats to a different guest about their Regen story.
- If you want to increase water holding capacity – follow the innovative and inspiring work of The Mulloon Institute. Chat to them about their farm consulting services.
- Join the cutting-edge Land to Market community and discover their new Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV) certification.
- Subscribe to the YLAD Living Soils newsletter. This will keep you across industry news and updates and show you why their high-quality humus compost is heroic.
- Read case studies of farmers who’ve jumped on board. They’re individually inspiring and collectively – they’re changing the face of Australian agriculture.
- Follow the Harris Family Regen Journey. We’re on a mission to walk the Regen walk and hope one day to be a renowned Regen case study.
- Buy yourself a copy of When Weeds Talk. This handy resource outlines the key to weed control: fertility management and balanced soil.
- Get to know your soil and have it independently tested and analysed by an entity outside the fertiliser industry. The Environmental Analysis Laboratory is a great place to start.
- You don’t have to be certified to be Regen, but by getting an Australian Organic Certification or Australian Biodynamic Certification, you’ll get some powerful and practical advice. Same goes for talking with numerous Organic farmers about their experience.
- Don’t forget – it’s not a sprint. Start introducing Regenerative Farming practices slowly. Give yourself enough time to observe and gauge how your land responds to your changes. This is about working with nature, not against it.
Working your way through this list should help demystify all things Regen. With all this info under your belt, you can kick off your land-loving practices with confidence.
