Dave's Market Update - 2 August 2023

Dave's Market Update for the 2nd of August 2023 includes broccoli, blueberries, leeks, strawberries, corn, gourmet tomatoes, kale, imperfect navel oranges, and celery.

In Veg

There is a plethora of vegetables available in the markets this week. Hearty staples broccoli, cauliflower, pre-pack corn, red washed potatoes, celery, leeks, and Chinese cabbage are all great value, and quality is amazing.

In leafy vegetables, we have an abundance of silver beet, kale and Asian veg that are all well priced. In our imperfect range, the standouts are imperfect zucchini, and Kumera, which are both on special and represent fantastic value.

This week, machine-picked beans are an opportunity being 25% of the hand-picked bean price. Whilst the quality of the machine-picked beans this week are fantastic; they do not have the shelf life that hand-picked beans have. Snacking tomatoes are a little light on but there is a good amount of gourmet tomatoes from Bowen in North Queensland in stores.

In Fruit

The longer days and warmer conditions have brought the strawberry crops in, with numbers on the increase. Growing conditions have been excellent, and the quality of the strawberries is as good as it gets.

Blueberries numbers are also on the increase. The mild winter conditions has seen a relatively slow start to the season but expect to see this change considerably from this week. Raspberries remain good value this week.

In citrus, some wonderful opportunities here. Imperfect Navel oranges and Imperial mandarins are both fantastic eating and amazing value. More importantly, Australian citrus producers need assistance. With the export markets still not fully recovered, all these fruits are making its way to market and needs a home.

All stores have case sale navels at a price very rarely seen. Fantastic for the break in kids weekend sports.
