DAVE'S PICK OF THE WEEK

"New season Queensland strawberries are now arriving in significant numbers at Sydney Markets. The fruit is full of flavour, excellent quality and attractively priced. This fruit comes from the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast where the nights are cold and the days warm which are the perfect conditions for this fruit. Unlike the southern fruit we have had recently, this fruit will keep well. Don’t forget to take them out of your fridge a good half hour before eating them, this brings out the flavour in the fruit. They are a real treat to add to your breakfast cereal or to snack on anytime.

HOW TO PICK
The perfect strawberry should be fully coloured, firm, bright, plump and shiny. Size plays no part in determining the perfect strawberry. In fact, small strawberries are equally as sweet and juicy as large ones. Make sure the cap (calyx) is attached, green and fresh-looking.

HOW TO STORE
The moisture content of strawberries is high, so always remove fruit from punnets and place (unwashed) in a large container lined with absorbent paper. Strawberries are best stored at 4°C, either uncovered or loosely covered. Serve at room temperature. Only remove their caps after washing and just prior to use."

DAVE'S MARKET UPDATE

In Veg

Another well supplied week in the veg category. Caulies are very well priced and on special in most stores as is broccolini. Red capsicums have become affordable (not really cheap, just affordable again). Brussel sprouts are still very good value though marginally dearer than last week, Sydney is well suppled with heirloom tomatoes, again not cheap, just more affordable. If you haven’t tried these tomatoes I strongly recommend you do, they are the best tomato you will eat and its mid winter! Broccoli and broccolini are still great value as is celery. This weekend we will have a very good line of baby cos on special , it’s a one off for the weekend only.”

In Fruit

“Strawberries from QLD will again be our top line this week. Again not cheap but marginally less than last week. This is the perfect weather for the fruit. A bit warmer through the day and we will see the prices ease again however this usually does not happen until mid or even late July. Also on the berry front we are seeing increased numbers of blueberries from far north Queensland and we should see moderate easing in price over the next week also.

The other very good news is on the cherry front, we are moving from Californian fruit to Washington state fruit, which enjoys far better climate for cherries. Our sources over in the USA are saying next week will see big volumes and price drops however they are saying that though the season is early it will be short and sweet and that the later fruit that we normally enjoy in the second half of July has had some weather damage unfortunately.

Avo’s continue to flood in and so do our citrus and apple supplies. I thoroughly recommend our imperfect navel offer. They are a genuine half price special, just a bit outside the supersize specs.
