The navel orange is one of the great everyday citrus fruits. Seedless, easy to peel, and reliably sweet with a clean brightness that makes it as satisfying to eat out of hand as it is squeezed into a glass. The large premium size means more fruit and more juice per orange.
Navel oranges are at their best from autumn through winter when Australian supply peaks and the sugars are at their highest. That is when they are worth buying by the bagful.
Look for oranges that feel heavy for their size with firm, smooth skin and a deep orange colour. A heavy orange has more juice. Avoid any that feel light, soft, or have started to dry out around the stem end.
Eat them fresh, juice them in the morning, slice them into a salad, or segment them over yoghurt. They also zest beautifully and the peel works well in marmalades and baked goods.
