Helm Wines - Half Dry Riesling - Canberra

Half Dry Riesling

This is a style of Riesling which is very popular in Germany, where is it is known as Halbtrocken (Half Dry). It is a particularly good accompaniment to spicy dishes as the slight sweetness in the wine balances the spice and heat. This is the 11th vintage of this very popular style, and each year we fine tune balance between flavour, acid and sweetness. Released under the distinctive red rose coloured label.

The Grapes

The season started with record winter rains, Canberra actually had its third-wettest winter on record. Rains continued into spring and temperatures were mild preventing any late season frosts. Excellent flowering conditions meant a good crop set. Vine growth was rampant providing good foliage coverage for all varieties, but especially for Riesling grapes to prevent sunburn. A hot dry summer aided ripening and reduced disease pressures.

There were several heatwaves during the season although our regular evening sea breeze cooled things down considerably overnight. Harvest saw a return to our typical autumn conditions, cool nights and warm days, which are perfect for making cool climate premium wines. Another very high quality season for the Canberra District, which makes three in a row, and all very different due to the weather conditions.

The Wine

Aromatic floral and orange blossom aroma. Juicy ripe citrus and stonefruit flavours on the middle palate with a dry refreshing finish.

Serve with

Great with spicy Thai, Chinese or Indian flavours where the sweetness of the wine balances out the heat.

Cellar for

The balance of acid and sugar in this wine means it is perfect to drink and enjoy now. If kept for longer than two years the wine will start to taste sweeter due to a drop in acidity.
