Pick of the Week - Snacking Tomatoes

"My pick this week are those fantastic, sweet snacking tomatoes in punnets.
Spring is when the new season for these start, the quality and taste improves and the price comes back, and this year they are a little earlier than normal. These tomatoes have now displaced the traditional Truss and field tomatoes to some extent and allowed the whole category to grow.
The reason for this is that field and Truss tomatoes have been put under such tremendous price pressure by the major supermarkets that the big growers have had to grow the highest yielding varieties to make a small profit. These varieties are not so good to eat. However, at this stage the punnets of snacking tomatoes still have great flavour and when on special, are actually quite reasonably priced.
This week, we have a couple of the varieties on a red hot special; these equate to $10 or $12.00 kg. At these prices, I really think you can’t go past these little flavour bombs. It’s just a better taste outcome and makes you realise the importance of flavour, it’s not all about price!"

HOW TO PICK

Look for brightly coloured tomatoes with firm, shiny skin. Turn the punnet upside down to check fruit is fresh looking throughout.

HOW TO STORE
Store at room temperature for better tasting tomatoes.

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“Fabulous spring weather is bringing on lots of excellent products. Asparagus is probably still the standout for value and we at HFM will have it on special this weekend for $1.00 bunch!
There has been a massive increase in the tomato supply and Truss particularly and all snacking tomatoes are eating well and are cheap.

Lebanese cucumbers remain inexpensive and we are seeing those sweet baby cukes at their cheapest for a year. All these prices have dragged tele cues down as well.

NSW stores have a superb line of fantastic eating yellow capsicums which compensates for red caps firming up. Broccoli, twin pack baby Cos and celery are all easing in price and great value for this weekend.”

In Fruit

“Not a lot of change in the fruit category. Blueberries are the go-to berry; well-priced and great quality. There are a few more raspberries around but they’re still fairly pricey.
Avocados continue to be excellent eating and great value; we are starting to see some West Australian product arriving. Papaya is weakly priced as well.
Finally, mango supplies are arriving in larger numbers and next week will see more attractive prices for all varieties.”
