Pick of the Week - Navel Oranges

“Navel oranges are the variety that grows in winter and Valencia’s are our oranges in summer.

Consumers all over the world seem, by and large, to prefer the much sweeter Navel variety, which is now at its peak period. They are excellent eating and make a fantastic juice which should be consumed straight after squeezing to maximise both the taste and vitamin benefits.

They are excellent to juice; however, this juice keeps for a few hours only whereas Valencia’s juice keeps for a week. So at HFM, we juice all Valencias, with certain farmers growing them out of season for us.

They love a good frost and in fact sweeten up even more after that occurs. All the growing areas have been receiving those frosts and Navels are now at their absolute best. They are an excellent source of vitamin C, beta-carotene, folate, fibre and various anti-oxidants.
For value, purchase a 3 kg net or a whole case, or just pick a few off the stack.”

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“At this stage, the heavy rains have mostly not landed in our growing areas, so no major dramas to date. The ever-reliable bagged carrots remain a steady fallback to a reliable special - they are great value.

Leek harvests are increasing, and our NSW stores have an excellent line of bunched leeks, fantastic value. All capsicums continue to be well supplied, especially greens and there are net options for a bargain in the reds.

Lebanese cucumbers are very cheap for mid-winter, and imperfect tomatoes and imperfect black zucchini are both budget saver specials.”

In Fruit

“Citrus and apples continue to be our main focus in fruit. In apples, this week, we have the first of our Cosmic Crisp variety. We had a few of these last year and more this year, they are a top variety - try them if you see them in your local fruit supplier.

In citrus, we are spoilt for choice. Empress mandarins are super and the southern Imperials see at their best. In oranges, this week, sees the first of the blood orange variety which are only with us for a short time, they make the best juice!

As well, this week sees plenty of raspberries, kiwi and gold kiwi and the imported cherries are very near their peak, so plenty of choices. Enjoy!”
