Pick of the Week - Truss Tomatoes

“Longer daylight hours in the growing regions of Victoria have resulted in some bumper harvests of truss tomatoes. The most popular and versatile in the tomato line-up, they find their place equally as well in a brekky frittata or a lunch sandwich, as they do in the dinner salad bowl.

Choose truss tomatoes that are firm, vibrantly red and fragrant. They will continue to ripen left on the vine in your fruit bowl.”

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“The big news, and my product of the week is truss tomatoes, from our grower in Tatura in Victoria. The crops are now maturing quickly and being picked daily. This has brought long awaited price relief – and truss tomatoes will represent excellent value and eating quality all week.

There are plenty of excellent winter crops of capsicums and snow peas being picked and making their way into store this week.

Another stellar week in other vegetables lies ahead. Broccoli, broccolini, Lebanese cucumbers and cauliflowers all in excellent supply from the growing regions of South-East Queensland as well as Victoria.

Chinese cabbage, fennel and loose beetroot are in abundant supply this week due to excellent growing conditions.

Celery is being harvested in huge numbers from Werribee, cheap and excellent.
Some terrific offerings this week in vegies to see out the last month of winter. Let’s get cooking!”

In Fruit

“The big citrus growing regions are certainly not disappointing this season. All of the mandarin and orange varieties are still superb on the back of ideal growing conditions. Blood oranges full of juice and deliciously sweet.

Dekapon mandarins don’t get any better than right now. From the Riverina district, they are bursting with flavour and excellent value.

We’re still waiting for the weather to warm up in Queensland to bring on the big numbers of delicious strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. Fingers crossed for the next couple of weeks!

Hass avocados from our grower in Toowoomba are looking fantastic. These are our favourite avocado variety, given their buttery texture and mild nutty flavour. The trees in this region are heavy with fruit and avocados are priced very keenly this week.”
