Pick of the Week - Blueberries

“There is still not quite the quantity we would expect in strawberries for July and that gap in berries is being plugged by blueberries which we are currently sourcing from far North Queensland right down to Coffs Harbour. They are all very good eating fruit regardless of size or growing provenance, they would be far cheaper if we had our normal supplies of strawberries for this time of the year.

The premium lines are mostly from far north; I personally am selecting the Mountain Blue fruit to take home. The small fruit from Coffs was traditionally all we had at this time. Public expectations have changed and there have been some corporate realignments in the industry all of which have been very disruptive to supply. Be prepared to switch from one blueberry to another as we grapple with irregular supply over the next week or two. By then, strawberries will also be plentiful and we should be enjoying our usual feast of winter berries.”

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“The extreme tomato prices we have had would appear to be passing. Tomatoes are certainly not a bargain yet but at least some reasonably priced options are now available. The imperfect fruit is really good, maybe a bit on the small side but good colour, good value fruit.
In the imperfect category, both zucchini and Kumera are really great value. Other bargains are radish, loose beetroot, celery and Chinese cabbage. Mushrooms and loose brown onions are also well priced.”

In Fruit

“With berries, it appears the strawberries are going to be a bit late and the blues a bit earlier than is normally the case. So that winter bargain time is still a little while away however I recommend the blueberries for their superb eating quality this week.
The other very good line is the imported cherries - sub $20.00 kilo for the first time this year. With the Aussie fruit still 4 months away, these are excellent value.

We are now into our premium Hass avocados from the Toowoomba area, really top-class fruit and this will be on offer for the next few months, you can buy with confidence now.
Mandarins and navel oranges are both fantastic flavour and well-priced and all the apples are fantastic. NSW school holidays are with us again, so not much happens in the industry until the kids go back to school.”
