Cape Gooseberries are known by several names including Golden Berries, Inca Berries, Peruvian Ground Cherries, or by their botanical name Physalis. Related to the tomatillo and tomato, Cape Gooseberries are small, golden berries encased in a pretty papery husk that looks like a Chinese lantern. They have a unique flavour that is both sweet and a little tart at the same time. Cape Gooseberries contain many positive health qualities. They are rich in Vitamins A, B-complex and C, and are high in fibre, antioxidants, iron and protein.
For you to Enjoy:
Cape Gooseberries are delicious to pop straight out of their husks and into your mouth. They are terrific in either savoury or sweet dishes. Try them in a green salad, with chicken, in cakes, or in desserts. They are often used as edible garnishes with their husks rolled back for decoration. The papery husks are not eaten.
Cape Gooseberries have great storability but once you’ve tried one, they won’t last long! Store your Cape Gooseberries still in their husks until you’re ready to use them. They can keep well in a cool dry spot. We recommend storing them in your refrigerator.
