Pick of the Week - Asparagus

I love September for the new season Australian asparagus. For the next 2 to 3 months, all our asparagus will be Australian. No white or purple asparagus yet, but they will be with us soon. However, in addition to our standard bunch at the moment, we have beautiful baby asparagus or our double-sized Grande bunches.

Very soon there will be imperfect asparagus in store too - it won’t always be available but often it will be. No fat or cholesterol, Aussie asparagus is the perfect new season Spring vegetable. Growing, harvesting and packing this product is very labour intensive and it’s highly perishable. Enjoy it at very competitive prices in all Harris farm stores this week.

HOW TO PICK
Look for bright spears with compact tips. Avoid any that look limp or discoloured. When you snap freshly harvested asparagus, it should be crisp, moist and juicy.

HOW TO STORE
If not eating straight away, wrap it in a damp tea towel, pop in a plastic bag and store in the crisper compartment of your fridge. To keep asparagus fresh for longer, trim the ends and stand in a glass with 1-2cm of water. Loosely cover with a plastic bag and store in fridge.
