Dave's Market Update & Pick of the Week - Lebanese Cucumbers - Wed 30 Sep 2026

Dave's Market Update

In VEG

This week there are three fabulous bargains with new season spring vegetables. The most dramatic of these is Lebanese cucumbers. They are freshly picked and delivered daily to our stores and should be the basis of a fabulous holiday weekend salad with this amazing spring weather we are enjoying. The other two absolute bargains are asparagus (try them on the barby with olive oil and salt) and fennel (try them in a salad with blood oranges which are coming to an end for the year).Β

Β

Snacking tomatoes are now getting that incredible spring flavour, we can’t get a straight run across all the shops however out of the different varieties I have eaten this week it has been the yellow skinned sweet delights and the sugar plum variety that are the best to eat. Hoping to have broccolini and shallots available on special this weekend."Β

In FRUIT

Β

"Rain in Coffs Harbour this weekend has reduced the picking of blueberries, however there is sufficient numbers now from both Queensland and Western Australia to make up the numbers. They are all eating really well and as well black berries are increasing in numbers and though certainly not cheap are now quite affordable. In citrus we are getting to the end of the blood orange season and so it’s back to navels for my morning juice. Here it’s the imperfects that are delivering enormous value.Β

Β

Seedless melon is falling in price and also not cheap and is definitely doable for the long weekend. The grapes are pretty much the same, they are tasty but not a bargain. Most importantly, for this long weekend my message is go the knights!"Β

Dave's Pick of the Week - Lebanese Cucumbers

Β

"My pick this week is Lebanese cucumbers, the most commonly produced vegetable in the world. Annual global production now exceeds 60 million tonnes. Here in Australia this product hits its peak for taste and quality in the springtime. They are grown in glasshouses all over the country and become more and more popular every year. The old fashioned green cucumber that my generation grew up with is very close to being a thing of the past. Traditionally Lebanese cucumbers can be, and this year has been, very dear in winter and with the onset of warmer weather in spring they just abound all over the country. So this week a great product, great quality and great prices for a fantastic spring vegetable that is high in antioxidants and vitamins A, C and K."
