Dave's Market Update - 6.04.22

In fruit:

We have our first Imperial mandarins in the stores this week. I always insist that May is the month for this wonderful fruit, however, my guys in the market tell me these are now very good but will of course get better as the season progresses; it might be safer to stay on the new season Afourer mandos for another week. In pears, the Williams variety is finished, and we now change to Packhams for a green skin variety however I did notice some particularly good Buerre Bosc in the stores this week. The Packhams are green, and it will be a good week before they are good to eat. Peaches and nectarine are over for the season however we have excellent plums instead. This week we are promoting the September Candy variety, extremely sweet and with a very small seed. This is also the last week of the Hass avocadoes, it has been the best year I have ever seen for them. Chestnuts are in full swing now and Papaya has come back at price this week. Fuji apples are excellent this week and we will have an excellent line of small fruit, very cheap in our stores this week. All the other apples and grapes continue to be excellent value, it is only berries that are not fantastic in the fruit category.

In veg:

A couple of different options in the stores this week. Firstly, all of our stores will have fantastic eating, well priced, brown mushrooms as opposed to the standard white varieties; they will have either Swiss Brown or Portobellos on at a great price. Celery has come way back in price this week also. Imperfect zucchini and kumera continue to be very good and well priced. Although Iceberg lettuce has gotten even dearer, our twin pack cos are very well priced and top quality.
