IN FRUIT
The situation is very similar to last week. Queensland strawberries continue to flood the market, but perhaps even more than last week and the quality particularly on the cheaper fruit continues to be average. I recommend sticking to our premium lines at this time; they are not dear but are more reliable than the cheaper fruit. As a company our blueberry sales now exceed our strawberry sales and this is for sure a reflection of the quality. All the blueberries are fantastic, well priced and great flavour. This is the peak month for kiwi fruit and they too are cheap and good. There are some better rockmelons available, and although the weather is quite cool seedless watermelon is selling well as it is cheap and good. Navels and blood oranges are excellent and kiwi gold is still one of my favourites. For something different the imported plums, the white and red speckled ones are superb to eat. Papaya is good but you must hold them until they are yellow to be ready to eat.
Mushrooms are again the talk of the town this week. Again superb quality, well priced and absolutely delicious. Some very nice broad beans in the shops this week, still on the dear side but very young and tender. Loose beetroot is very affordable again as is rhubarb and broccolini. As I said in my pick of the week section though the absolute standout is the new season Aussie asparagus. It's fantastic!
