Dave's Market Update - 21 June 2023
In Veg
The best news for our customers is the dramatic drop in tomato prices this week. It has started with excellent quality Queensland Field tomatoes this week, however as customers switch to buying these all tomatoes will be forced to come back in price. The same growing conditions have had an effect on capsicums and we are seeing dramatic price falls here too. These lines are now around one-quarter the price they were a year ago. Perhaps these lines will help our RBA governor with his next rates decision?
Imported asparagus is cheap as is coriander, and washed potatoes. Celery and zucchini are both still over-supplied as are Chinese cabbage, Kumera (especially imperfect Kumera) and leeks. Great bargains in all HFM stores this week!
In Fruit
Very little change this week. Berries are straining at the bit to get going but the cold nights in the growing areas in Queensland are still holding back the ripening process. Our GMax avocados are very near completion, and over the next week, we will transition to the Hass variety, which is now starting in southern Queensland, are eating well.
Lemons are cheap and good, and will be on special this weekend. We are still selling Queensland mandarins which is unusual this late in June. The southern fruit which is now in the market looks better but is not eating well, some are dry and not really sweet. Our NSW stores will have a fantastic line of imperfect Packham pears this week.
