Dave's Market Update - 21.10.20
IN VEG:Â
Plenty of fabulous opportunities in the veg markets this week! Red washed potatoes from South Australia will make a great addition to your shopping basket week. On special in all stores, Red washed potatoes are a flavoursome and versatile potato. They are delish as a mash, when roasted as chips or as part of the most magnificent creamy gnocchi you’ll likely ever eat! There is still an abundance of excellent new crop Sydney basin Lebanese cucumbers in the markets and really good value. This week, we are also promoting telegraph cukes. From South Australia, they are in abundance this week! In fact, they are at prices we only see a handful of times a year. A low acidity sweet cucumber, telegraph cukes are great eating, great quality and a great price. In tomatoes, the standout this week is the medley snacking tom mix. Truss toms and asparagus are still in good supply and excellent quality.
IN FRUIT:Â
Kensington Pride mangoes from Katherine have started. Katherine has not experienced the rainfall that Darwin has, and as a result the mangoes are looking great, however the Darwin Kensington pride mangoes are eating magnificently and that’s what I’ll be taking home this week. The Darwin fruit is showing the effects of some serious volumes of rain and a very windy season but the mangoes eat as sweet as honey, and are a real treat. Look past the superficial markings and rough appearance and enjoy these Darwin mangoes. Our trays sale mangoes are all Darwin fruit and great value at $20.00 a tray, whilst we have a 10kg bulk box offer even cheaper. I must stress that Darwin mangoes must be eaten within a few days of purchase.
There are some good things happening with melons in the markets this week. Rockmelons are into some of the better eating varieties with plenty of value in the smaller sizes. Orange candy melon is a new melon variety grown in North Queensland. It has a bright yellow shinny smooth skin which indicates fruit maturity. It is a relatively short season from October to December. This particular melon is best eaten when flesh is firm and crisp, not soft. Orange candy melon is a very refreshing fruit sweet fruit and the perfect palate cleanser – make sure to give it a try this weekend!
