In Veg
Perfect weather for the winter vegetables that are well supplied this week. Leeks are particularly good quality and cheap. Broccoli, cauliflowers, and brussels sprouts are still flooding into the markets and just ideal for hearty winter meals.
Celery, snackable carrots, Kumera; both premium and imperfect, and all black zucchinis are all in a similar position. By this weekend, we'll see some great tomato specials, particularly with our imperfect line. Snow peas and Honey Snaps are easing, and NSW stores have an excellent line of parsnips at a fantastic price this week.
Very different situation to a year ago when the crops were flooded, and we had to endure record prices. So, whatever is keeping the inflation numbers up, it is definitely NOT fruit and veg.
In Fruit
Another great week for Kiwi with both Green and Gold varieties, both well supplied and eating fantastically. We are continuing with our green skin avocados as opposed to Hass that most are selling. I believe they cut cleaner and taste better.
I am pleasantly surprised at the incredibly good quality of the imported cherries at the moment. These early arrivals are from California, traditionally only just a cherry, but the fruit I got from one of our shops last weekend, was superb and not that dear. While the winter berries from Queensland remain so dear, I think these are great options; apples, navel oranges and pears (our imperfects are fantastic fruit and fantastic value). Until the days warm up on the Sunshine Coast, the berries will remain pricey.
