IN FRUIT
Another good week for fruit coming up. Peaches will be great eating and very good value this week. Again, our Aussie limes are cheaper and fresher than the imported lemons. I am seeing lots of cheap inferior NZ avocados in the market. I would recommend that you avoid them. They are in every way inferior to our fantastic Western Australian fruit. They are cheaper and should be. But they don’t have the flavour and often cut poorly, so stick with the Aussie fruit. All the better fruiterers in Sydney do this, price is secondary if you end up throwing product away. Grapes, seedless watermelon and rockmelons are all very good this week. We are starting to see some better eating plums and figs in the market. In berries, there are bargains to be had in both blueberries and blackberries. Raspberries are not quite as good, and the strawberry quality is generally poor.
IN VEGIES
Summer is when we get some fantastic corn. It’s not really cheap, but it’s really good eating. The feast of tomatoes continues unabated. Truss, imperfects, sweet delights and yellow snacking tomatoes are all inexpensive, ripe and wonderful eating. Kestrel potatoes are at their best and we have a 2kg prepack Desiree at bargain prices in all stores. For something a bit different, okra is coming into its own as it does late January every year. All cucumbers remain a bargain, so lots of good salad options again this week.
