daves market update harris farm

IN FRUIT
People often ask me in May and June why are blueberries so dear. My response is that is they are totally out of season in these months and that twelve or so years ago we had some weeks without them at all and when we did have them, they were $20 and even more per punnet. So be patient, there will be blueberries every week, but they’ll be dear until mid-July. However, what we do have is grapes and plums. With the plums, my pick is the September Candy variety. All our apples, pears, mandarins and bananas continue to be excellent quality and reasonably priced. Quinces are probably at their best for the next few weeks and if you are a fan of Fuyu fruit, have a look at our imperfect offer.

IN VEGIES
The absolute bargains this week at Harris Farm are snow peas, broccolini, imperfect kumera and Iceberg lettuce. It’s the prepacked snow peas that are the bargain and broccolini is around the same kilo price as broccoli. Iceberg lettuce are superb quality and the imperfect kumera are nearly as good as the premium product, but far cheaper. We are seeing English spinach, Dutch carrots and mushrooms all at their best and quite inexpensive. Red capsicums are a little dearer than last week, but still great value and I see signs of many other vegetables being oversupplied by next week.
