IN FRUIT
As discussed in my pick of the week, Shepard avocados from North Queensland are now in full swing. There is lots of fruit, in fact this is a bumper crop. This means a lot of smaller than usual fruit. Look for bargains in our small fruit and in many cases our imperfect fruit will just be the really small fruit at really cheap prices. Just as good to eat but small. In apples, the galas are better as the growers clear out some early fruit that was picked in brutal heat and for those who don’t mind a not so sweet apple, Jonathons, an old-fashioned favourite with a bit of tang are now underway. Stone fruit is coming to the end of the season, however, the white nectarines are still excellent. Limes are still a cheaper option than lemons and Williams pears are fantastic. Grapes are the standout fruit again this week. They are just so good, all varieties, and the price is amazingly cheap.
IN VEGIES
The huge drop in cauliflower prices this week is great news. They have been extremely dear, but the price has nearly halved this week. Two other bargains this week are new season brushed potatoes and kestrel potatoes too. Both far cheaper than last week. Lebanese cucumbers and baby cucumbers are both attractively priced, and English spinach and imported asparagus are very reasonable and good quality. The English Spinach from Victoria is arriving daily and compensating for the shortfall we have here in NSW at the moment. Imperfect kumera continues to be inexpensive and this week the imperfect lines of the purple sweet potato are also a bargain.
