Dave's Market Update - 31.10.17

fresh market update 31.10.17
IN FRUIT
I love this time of the year as the new summer fruit gets underway. Very good lychees and apricots this week, in addition to the fabulous mangoes. Cherries have started, they are dear and not really crunchy just yet. Peaches and nectarines are starting to ease in price, of these I think the yellow peaches are the best eating. Imported pomegranates have tumbled in price and there is still lots of imported grapes. A very interesting new mango is in our stores this week known as the Lady Jane. Still in very limited quantities, it has the colour of a Calypso but better eating. These early samples are from Katherine but I suspect they will be grown across the country, they look fantastic.

This week HFM is pushing Josephine pears, well worth a try if you haven’t done so before. This is the very best time of the year to eat Papaya from far North Queensland. Finally, strawberries are far better quality and there are more of them available and so cheaper than they have been for some weeks. So lots of options to start your summer fruit feasting.

IN VEGETABLES
In veg, lots of choices here this week. All cucumbers are at bargain prices. Kale, Dutch carrots and rhubarb are all plentiful and good quality, as is English spinach and beetroot. In tomatoes this week my pick is the sweet pearls which come in a punnet. So enjoy the feast from Harris Farm.
