A genuinely impressive apple. The Missile is a large, deeply red and intensely flavoured Australian variety that has earned its place at the premium end of the apple range on eating quality alone. Sweet and tart in equal measure with a firm dense flesh and a satisfying crunch that smaller varieties simply cannot match.

At its very best from late summer through autumn when fresh harvest fruit arrives from Australian orchards. February to May is your window for peak Missile. Available year-round from cold storage but the fresh harvest apple is always the one worth seeking out.

Eat it fresh where the size and flavour can be fully appreciated, slice alongside a cheese board where the sweet tart balance works beautifully with aged and washed rind cheeses, or pack it as the apple that actually fills you up.

Look for deep red skin that is firm and dense with good weight for its size. A Missile should feel substantial in the hand and that density tells you everything about what is waiting inside.
