Pick of the Week - Brussels Sprouts
"My pick this week is Brussels sprouts.
It is a very old-fashioned vegetable that has done a marvelous job of reinventing itself. In my childhood, bitter-tasting Brussels were something most kids despised. Now with smaller, sweeter varieties, this vegetable has become immensely popular.
Prepared in combination with salmon, bacon, and a myriad of other options - there would hardly be a trendy restaurant in Sydney that does not have them at some stage on their winter menu!
Remarkably high in vitamin C, they are a Brassica and part of the cabbage family, and absolutely one of our most popular winter vegies. Brussels will be as cheap as we will see them this season in all HFM stores. It will keep in the fridge for 4 or 5 days."
Dave's Market Update
In Veg
“As mentioned in my pick of the week, the quality and price of Brussel Sprouts make them my standout special of the week. We have the opportunity to push a few heirloom tomatoes again this weekend, and as always, they are the best eating tomato we sell.
All caps are good value, yet it’s yellows again that are my pick of these this week. Caulies and broc have both firmed a-bit but still relatively cheap.
Excellent value to be had in Iceberg lettuce yet again and baby cukes remain inexpensive for midwinter. A few more leeks about this week so let’s get them on the menu again!”
In Fruit
“As always at this time there is a huge emphasis on citrus in our fruit sales. Navel oranges have started to eat better and are easing in price. I think that Cara Cara navels which are getting underway now are eating and juicing really well, great alternative to navels, as are imperfect navels, so pay less for your oranges than has been the case.
The other thing in citrus is how late the southern imperial Mandarines are this year. Fortunately, that gap has been plugged by a massive crop of Afourers and now Murcotts are starting as well.
Imperfect Pink ladies and Packham pears are inexpensive options to the premium fruit and both are around half the regular price. The other excellent imperfect line is Gmax avocadoes, to me these are eating better than the north Qld Hass variety of fruit.
Kiwi Gold is still excellent value and in berries I am now taking blueberries home, they are eating better than most if not all the strawberries either Bundaberg or Sunshine Coast fruit, neither of which are getting the hot dry days and cold nights that brings out the best in them watch this space in the coming weeks for the tsunami of blueberry specials.”
