Pick of the Week - Imperfect Avocados (NSW)

“My pick this week is imperfect avocados. The industry creates these opportunities from time to time as seasonal changes occur.

This week, the supermarkets are in the process of changing from the Shepard variety to Hass leading to the tail end of the Shepards becoming surplus to requirements. This gives the more nimble operators being able to pick up some incredible bargains. To avoid this perfectly good fruit becoming landfill, we are going to sell it at prices you will not believe. So, if ever there was a week in the last few years to enjoy an absolute feast of Shepard avos this is it.

Guacamole, entrees salads or snacking, this price fits the bill. If we don’t pit a ridiculously cheap ticket on this fruit, we will get caught with the huge volume of fruit we have committed. Help our farmers to clear the decks.
Buy up big and enjoy the cheapest avos in years!“

Pick of the Week - QLD Strawberries (QLD)

“At HFM in QLD, we love this time of the year for our close proximity to and access to QLD strawberries.

Here in the Brisbane markets, we get most of the strawberries for May. Come June, QLD supplies all the east coast and whichever market is best gets the fruit. However, for the next couple of weeks, the fruit mostly stays here. To me, the best of the early fruit comes from Stanthorpe. It eats better than Sunshine Coast or Bundaberg fruit. We have this fruit on special in our QLD stores this week.”

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“Another good week for all veg, the unseasonably warm weather in growing areas (which it looks like is nearly over) has certainly brought on excellent supplies. Real Autumn basics; broccoli, caulies and corn are all excellent quality and very well priced.

As well, we are seeing shallots, celery and English spinach cheaper than they have been for some time. Yellow capsicums, a favourite of my family have eased and may come back further still.

Finally, both fennel and baby cukes have eased as well; these baby cukes are a great healthy snack for the kids school lunchboxes. Enjoy the endless summer!”

In Fruit

“The change of avocados has left some growers struggling to clear the tail end of their Shepard variety fruit. We have the cheapest price I have seen on these for years in our NSW stores. Queensland strawberries are starting to come on and for Mother’s Day, which is always a high demand week, they are very reasonably priced and in fact will be on a great special in our Queensland stores.

With Imperial mandarins, we are moving slightly south from Gayndah to Mundubbera and unusually there is a gap between the two this week, it should be back to normal next week.
In citrus, we have a fantastic line of premium lemons in store at half last week’s price. Navels are now underway from Oz but they are still a bit sour, I think go another week on the imported product.

Gold kiwi is eating as well as I can remember and is not dear, and much the same can be said of seedless watermelon.

With grapes, it’s definitely time to move to the reds, they are picked later and eating better than the other varieties.

Finally, apples are enjoying a year of fantastic quality and good prices; not too cheap for the growers, nor to dear for the consumers especially if you select from our imperfect offering.”

Imperial mandarins are still fantastic, and we are seeing a sprinkling of Qld strawberries being sold by us, we sell them as premiums which they are and are priced accordingly.”
