Pick of the Week - New Season Australian Asparagus

“I love September for the new season Australian asparagus. It is such a fresher and better product than the imported alternative. The next 2 to 3 months, all our asparagus will be Australian. No white or purple asparagus yet, but they will be with us soon. However, as well as the standard bunch, we have beautiful baby asparagus or our double-sized Grande bunches. The Grande bunches look dear but per kg it’s well-priced and it’s my favourite, especially early in the season.
 
By this weekend, there will be imperfect asparagus in store too, it won’t always be available but often will be. No fat or cholesterol, Aussie asparagus is the perfect new season Spring vegetable. Growing, harvesting and packing this product is very labour intensive and it’s highly perishable, enjoy it at very competitive prices in all Harris farm stores this week.”

HOW TO PICK
Look for firm, bright smooth spears of uniform size with closed, compact tips. When you snap freshly harvested asparagus, it should be crisp, moist and juicy.
 
HOW TO STORE
If not eating straight away, wrap it in a damp tea towel, pop in a plastic bag and store in the crisper compartment of your fridge. To keep asparagus fresh for longer, trim the ends and stand in a glass with 1-2cm of water. Loosely cover with a plastic bag and store in the fridge.

In Veg

“It’s September and as always, a touch of warm weather brings on the asparagus crops. On special at a great price in all HFM stores this week with interesting options for baby asparagus and Grande bunches as well. It’s a great veg to bar-b-que as well.
 
Corn continues to be my favourite veg and this week, it’s the prepacks that are the bargain. Kestrel potatoes are our pick again this week, they are definitely my favourite spud

Kale is cheap and good. Snacking tomatoes are really getting going with the warm weather, we can’t buy one line to have in-all the stores yet so instead we have one variety in each store that is a real bargain and that’s only until full supply ramps up.

In true spring form, we are seeing different herbs oversupplied in pockets everywhere and there will be bargains galore in these lines each week.”

In Fruit

“Fruit sales continue to be very strong, in particular berries and of these it’s the blueberries leading the charge.
 
HFM does sell blueberries in a range of different packs, everything from 125 gram punnets to 1 kilo packs. I am loving walking by the fridge and snacking on this fabulous fruit especially our premium offer. The strawberries are also well priced and the raspberries also only leaving the blackberries a bit pricey.

We have a really great line of Murcott mandarins at a great ticket in all stores. Avocados continue to sell really well as do Kiwi Gold. All oranges are really good, NSW stores will have an excellent value line of Cara Cara navels on special this weekend. Well priced mangoes are coming soon.”
