Pick of the Week - Imported Cherries

“The subject of imported fruit always raises questions with both farmers and customers, and I think that is quite legitimate where the imports overlap or even go close to overlapping the local fruit. In some categories, this does happen and to me makes no sense. However, with cherries, the imports start a minimum three months after our season finishes and they finish around two and a half months before the Aussie crop commences.

The cherries from the USA fall into two distinct categories.  Normally, commencing in late May, we get Californian cherries which this year we’re completely wiped out with rain. And so we got none until a week or so ago, when we commenced the cherries from Washington state which are always far better fruit than the Californian crop.

This fruit is fantastic quality and considering the transport costs getting them here to us is very inexpensive. It will be a short season this year, and this week and next will be the best and cheapest fruit, so get in and enjoy this wonderful product.

Great varieties, delicious fruit and I recommend them. Enjoy them the next two weeks and then wait for the Aussie fruit in November.”

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“Lots of good value veg specials this week. Loose corn is eating particularly well and is very well priced this week. Similarly, both caulies, broccoli and broccolini are all really great value and perfect for your winter meals.

Our old reliable pre-pack carrots are a great standby and loose beetroot is top quality and very good value.

We have very good loose red washed potatoes, well priced and imperfect tomatoes are cheap and good quality.

There is an oversupply of top-quality mushrooms again this week and look for a bargain in stores on these. Go the BLUES!!!”

In Fruit

“Great week for USA cherries this week. It’s been a very difficult season over there with rain but the fruit is really good and very well priced this week.

Berries are starting to come good with both raspberries and blackberries looking good this week. The blueberry flush is still coming, maybe a little slower than I expected.

Imperfect offers are great value, our navels are really good value and the Pink Ladies are just fantastic.

Give us some dry weather and warmer days in QLD and we will be inundated with fruit.”
