Pick of the Week - Pre-pack Corn

"Sweet corn from Gympie in Southern Queensland is now in full production. At present, we are sourcing the Gold sweet variety due to its better eating qualities. Gold sweet corn is harvested when the kernels are soft and sweet.

Corn is an extremely easy and versatile vegetable popular with kids and can be as simple as the 'easy as' corn on the cob to soups as well as your favourite Mexican dish. I enjoy corn simply on the cob with a pinch of salt and a splash of butter. "

- David Harris

HOW TO PICK
Pick corn with bright green husks and plump kernels.

HOW TO STORE
Store corn in its husk in the crisper section of your fridge for up to 3 days.

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“Some better weather across the growing areas is delivering top quality, reasonably priced veg.
Great value this week is corn. At HFM this week, we have pre-packs substantially cheaper than they have been and they are eating really well.
A couple of other spring lines are coming on in good numbers as well. Snacking tomatoes are falling in price; we have Sweet Delights in our NSW stores and in Queensland we have Medley mix tomatoes. Both are considerably cheaper than they have been.

Leeks are now well supplied as is broccolini, celery and red capsicums. Imperfect zucchinis are still cheap, so there are plenty of good options in our stores this week.”

- David Harris

In Fruit

“It’s a berry feast this week. Blueberries and strawberries are both fantastic quality and cheap. If we can get a run of dry weather up there and some nice warm spring days, it will just get better and better.
Apples are great. There is real value to be found in the imperfect lines, notably Granny Smiths and Pink Ladies.
Pears are fabulous, hard to go past the Packhams and again the imperfects deliver real value.
All citrus is at its prime. The navels are sweet as honey, Ruby grapefruit and mandarins both great value. Blood oranges are magnificent - it’s the perfect time of the year for citrus.”
