Pick of the Week - Seedless Watermelon

"Timing is everything in fruit and veg and this week we have timed our run with seedless watermelon perfectly. With the weather warming up and the wholesale price being half of last week’s, we are retailing seedless melon at $1.99 KG in all stores this week.
The majority of the fruit is coming from Mildura in the north-western corner of Victoria. Customers should take advantage of this great special as it will definitely not be around for any extended period."

- David Harris

HOW TO PICK
Look for fruit with smooth skin, free from brown patches. It should sound hollow when tapped.

HOW TO STORE
Store out of direct sunlight for up to one week. Once cut, cover and store in the fridge for up to three days.

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“Another good salad week coming up. Truss tomatoes are even cheaper than last week; I am really glad HFM doesn’t own or operate greenhouses!

As well, we have a choice of well-priced (cheap actually) snacking tomatoes to choose from. As well, as Truss, there is Lebanese cucumbers and baby cukes to choose from. Summer salads have never looked more reasonable. Iceberg lettuce is not cheap but quite reasonable rounding out the salad offer.

Three really solid options for your evening vegetables this week are pre-pack corn, brushed potatoes and broccoli which will be about half last week’s price by this weekend.

Herbs are well supplied, I would say everything is running smoothly and to plan in the veg category.”

- David Harris

In Fruit

“Mangoes are not quite as plentiful this week. The smaller crop from Darwin is fast winding up and the Katherine crop (also Territory but 200 kms further south, has commenced but not in full swing yet) but they are really eating well.

The other big news in fruit is the fall in the price of seedless watermelon. It’s sweet and ready to eat and now is around half the price of ten days ago. Buy it whole and you will save around twenty percent!

In berries, the blues have seen storms in the picking areas which has somewhat disrupted supply, however, they are still a great option, and like last week, blackberries are very well priced.

Kiwi Gold is excellent and we are now all Aussie on our white grapes (which will only get sweeter every week).

In stone fruit, I have been really happy with how the first peaches and nectarines have been eating and look forward to some good cherries arriving next week. I really love summer and the beautiful fruit that comes with it.”
