Pick of the Week - Cauliflower

“Cauliflowers are my pick of the week.

Choose cauliflowers are that nice and tight, and snow white. Don’t be too quick to remove the outside leaves – they’ll keep nicely in your crisper of you leave them on. Cauliflowers definitely favour cooler climates for optimal growth.
Low in calories and high in fibre, cauliflower can be roasted, boiled, steamed, microwaved or sauteed.
Two eating methods for cauliflower that fly under the radar include blending them into soups or snacking on raw florets!
Terrific value and at the peak of their season – clear some room in the crisper.”

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“Cauliflowers are being harvested in huge numbers from Werribee, in Victoria this week. Broccoli, celery and broccolini are also superb right now.
Our snow pea grower in Southeast Queensland has seen improved growing conditions and his trellises are bursting with crisp, sweet snow peas being picked today to make their way into store this week.
Capsicums are also in abundance. Bundaberg crops are ready to be picked now, cheap and delicious.
Washed potatoes from our grower in Virginia, SA are excellent now. Perfect for mashing and chipping, they are an affordable and versatile accompaniment to any dinner.”

In Fruit

“Gold kiwifruit are beautiful at the moment. Best eaten when starting to yield to a gentle squeeze, they are sweet and have smooth creamy texture. Increasing in popularity, they are now being more widely grown in Australia than their green cousins.
Afourer mandarins are absolutely the pick of the crop in citrus for the next few weeks. They are virtually seedless, full of juice and super sweet. Perfect for the lunch box, they are easy to peel and great value.
Our mandarin juice squeezed fresh daily is my favourite. At this time of the year, I think it’s better than our freshly squeezed OJ. A slightly milder flavour, but distinctly mandarin – I drink one every day.
Big, unruly and with a funny looking knob on top, if you haven’t tried a Dekapon mandarin you’ll be in for a surprise. Looks can be deceiving.”
