Pick of the Week - New Season Lunchbox Gala Apples 

“Our first apple of the year is the Gala variety. There are a few old season pink ladies in the market , for me, a fresh crisp new season Gala is by far the better option. We are fortunate to have a couple of orchards in the Bilpin district, right nearby in the Blue mountains, that have started to pick in time for Back-to-School.

The fruit is sweet eating but running on the small side as there was very little rain from September right through to early Jan which has meant no size in the fruit. All apples hate 40 plus degree heat and so any fruit from Victoria, which is the vast majority of the early fruit, goes pale and will not eat like this truly local fresh fruit.

Enjoy the new season! This fruit is in your shopping trolley within a few days of harvesting. Keep them in your fridge until the day you intend to eat them would be my advice, there is more hot days coming!”

In Veg

“It’s Back-to-School this week and mother nature has supplied some great, inexpensive and tasty vegetables to fill those lunch boxes. My two favourites that our grandkids love any time are those super sweet little snacking carrots and baby cukes. Both are in abundant supply, inexpensive and absolutely top quality.

We also have beautiful snacking tomatoes, great eating, healthy and so reasonably priced. NSW stores only have a flush of zucchini flowers that are a by-product of the heavy rainfall that occurred recently, half last week’s price and will go up again quickly so enjoy them whilst they are available.”

In Fruit

I am thrilled to see a decent show of apples back in store. New season Galas from the Blue Mountains here in time for the kids going back to school. Fresh, crisp fruit, albeit a little on the smaller side. The other value lunch box fruit is bagged white grapes. Not as large as our premium fruit but great value nonetheless.
Imperfect plums and the smaller nectarines (both white and yellow) should satisfy the fussiest school kids! Seedless melon is very good and we have an excellent line of large premium quality Honey Gold mangoes in all stores - they are better than KP’s this week.
By next week, we should see new season pears in store as well, so I’m sure there will be fruit on offer to satisfy everyone.”
