Pick of the Week - Imperial Mandarins

“This week, there is a flush of good quality bananas in the market. I don’t think it will go for long but with school going back next week, it’s a great option for the school lunchbox (as are mandarins).
Cheapest price for months so enjoy that whilst it lasts.”

- David Harris
HOW TO PICK

If you want to eat them straight away, choose fruit with bright yellow skins without marks or bruises.

HOW TO STORE

Store bananas in the fruit bowl. Refrigerating bananas causes their skins to blacken.

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“A difficult week this week. With public holidays and the associated transport issues, penalties and disrupted trading, supply is limited this week.

With so many lines are not well supplied this week, the best options are Lebanese cucumber - great quality and cheap, broccolini and Jap (Kent) pumpkin. By next week, everything will be back to normal.”

In Fruit

“Most fruits (but not berries) can be stored and so growers are less concerned about the holiday disruptions and hence there are plenty of options here. The best news of all is that we have secured an excellent line of inexpensive bananas. Our supplier needs to move a quantity and has reduced the price as have our retail stores. Perfect for Back to School in QLD this week and the NSW stores next week. Also great for those lunch boxes are Imperial mandarins. May is the best time to enjoy these.

As we are near the end of the plum season, we always prefer Flavour Fall plums. The best of these come from Western Australia. They are not cheap but juicy and delicious -  you have to buy these a few days before you consume them and definitely leave them out of the fridge.

There are a few raspberries around and these have eased in price. I know we all love the big juicy, crunchy grapes we have been selling but you can’t go much past the small inexpensive Crimson Seedless that are in store this week. We are nearing the end of the Williams pear season, and those imperfect pears are incredible value.
Finally, Kiwi Gold are now in full swing and fantastic to eat.”
