Pick of the Week - Rhubarb

"My pick this week is rhubarb.
In Spring, rhubarb plants really come to life. Rhubarb is one of the few vegetables that grow all year around; in the hottest of summer to massive frosts in winter.  We source this daily fresh from our growers in the Hawkesbury basin.
The red stems are delicious but whatever you do, don't eat the leaves as they are poisonous!
Great in desserts such as cakes, crumbles, pies, and tarts or stewed. My personal favourite recipe is as a compote. Add it with cereals and berries for breakfast - it is hard to beat. The stewed product keeps well in an airtight container for a week or two. Now is the best time of year for rhubarb!”

How to Pick

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“Asparagus continues to fall in price and get even better in quality. This week, it is just so good!

Fresh new season spring asparagus, we are loving it at home. I am putting on the barby with a little salt and a light sprinkle of olive oil, it couldn’t be better. The other great value special in all HFM stores this week are big generous bunches of rhubarb at just $2.00 bunch, that’s value!

As always in spring, the new crop of delicious snacking tomatoes is now underway. It’s hard to choose which one to buy! All capsicums are top quality and cheap, try the yellows for a change.
Fennel is fantastic and a bargain as are Lebanese cucumbers. NSW stores will have green Shanghai at a bargain price this weekend. Love spring, love the weather and Penrith for a win this weekend."

In Fruit

“Beautiful weather in NSW & Queensland and we have fantastic fruit to go with that. The most dramatic change has been the halving in price of seedless watermelon.  Fabulous quality and by this weekend a great price too!
The mango season has now really got going; beautiful, coloured fruit and it is eating really well. You have got to love summer (well nearly summer!)

As well, we are seeing good arrivals of papaya, although it hasn’t been reflected in prices yet. However, just watch this space over the next week. The flood of blueberries continues. Any smaller berries are cheap but are still good eating and the premium large fruit is just superb.
Some of the fruit approaching its end of season are still really good such as Afourer mandarins and Packham pears (especially the imperfects) continue to please.”
