DAVE'S PICK OF THE WEEK

“This week, we are having a real push on a vegetable that is overlooked by many. Our better restaurants get it, most people today don’t know what to do with them. It is the first really good season for 5 years and the quality is magnificent.

A bit of work prepping them, look elsewhere in this newsletter as to how to do that. The season is short, the quality and price are fantastic.”

DAVE'S MARKET UPDATE

In Veg

"It’s certainly salad season now and we have you covered with great specials at Harris Farm. We have a red hot special on Truss tomatoes in all our stores. To go with that our NSW stores have top quality Lebanese cucumbers at an unbeatable price, in our Qld stores, it will be Telegraph cucumbers.

As discussed in my blog, we have a one off special on broad beans in all stores. Our direct grower in Victoria has nearly ten tonnes of these and perfect weather means they will all need to be harvested and sold, watch this space! Buy a box and peel them and put some in your freezer!

The fabulous asparagus crop continues to deliver the goods for us - bargain prices for excellent product. I am barbecuing again and the asparagus on the barby lightly grilled with olive oil, salt and a dash of lemon is to die for!”

In Fruit

“Again, it’s beautiful KP mangoes and berries this week and now cherries are firmly on the HFM radar. The mangoes are now mostly from Katherine which are the best eating and best looking Territory mangoes. No rain up there yet and the quality is superb as is the price.

Berries are good and well-priced maybe a fraction dearer than week ago except for raspberries.

Cherries, mostly from South Australia are unbelievable for this early in the season. Perfect weather will see these on special in all HFM stores by the weekend. Certainly not cheap but close to half the price of a week ago, I will be taking a box to our Melbourne Cup lunch!

Seedless melon is also excellent and well-priced and new season white grapes from Australia are very good eating and will only get cheaper in the weeks to come"
