Pick of the Week - Navel Oranges

“In Australia, summertime means our local oranges are all Valencia’s. Because so many consumers prefer the sweeter taste of navel oranges, we import navels from the United States. The freight alone is a massive component of the cost of bringing them to our shores, none the less we do import.

Personally, I still buy 3kg net of our local Valencia’s every week. I juice them every day and they are fabulous. However, this week, we have some excellent quality premium USA navels in store at a very, very attractive price. It will only be this price for 3 or 4 weeks so jump in whilst we have this top quality fantastic navel orange special.”

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“Things look very good for salads in the veg area this week. Lebanese cucumbers, baby cukes and Truss tomatoes lead the charge. Cukes are around the same as last week, however the other two have really eased in price.

Sweet Delight tomatoes, the most popular of our snacking are very inexpensive and will be on a super special for the weekend. As well both celery and Iceberg lettuce are way down in price. Broccoli is also easing as is loose corn, so lots of options to eat well for not a lot of money.”

In Fruit

“Not quite sure where to start with so many great options available this week. Firstly mangoes, we are fully into Derek Foleys’ fabulous Silky variety. These are so far the best eating mangoes for the next two or three weeks. I want our mango loving customers to get in whilst they last.

Next, we have the best white grape from the best grower now underway. I am referring to the white Ivory variety grown by the Cordoma family. I started buying from their grandfather, Joe, in the old Haymarket fifty years ago. Growing the best eating grapes in Australia runs in this family’s DNA. They are around double the price of your standard supermarket varieties, mainly because they are twice as good to eat. Our imported Navels are very well priced as are our nectarines.

February to early March is the best month for melons and the Dawson’s have as always sent us fantastic eating, well priced rock melons and Honeydews this week. Again, we have very local Galas instore this week from Darkes Forest, just south side of Sydney, eating better than any of the Victorian fruit that has been severely stressed with the incredible heat down there.

Nectarines are still inexpensive and full of flavour and to round out our fruit offer, we have some great eating West Australian avocados. These too are heat stressed, the avocado is still perfect inside, just doesn’t look all that smart. We will have a fantastic special on these for the weekend.”
