Pick of the Week - Orange Candy Melon

It's not often that I recommend new varieties of fruit but today there is one I would like you to try - Orange Candy melon. For years, the sweetest melon we grew and enjoyed were honeydews. We only ate them in season, and they were typically only sold in areas where there were lots of European migrants who understood them. They were picked ripe and were delicious. Sadly, the major retailers pushed to have the season extended and insisted that shelf life was more important than flavour. So, we lost the flavour in honeydews, very similar to what happened years ago with tomatoes.

The family growing these melons are arguably the premier melon growers in north Queensland and they are determined not to sacrifice flavour on these melons. The result is a fantastic eating product. It will only be grown in season and picked when its mature. We, the public, are the winners here! Orange Candy melon is on special in Harris farm stores this week.

HOW TO PICK
Look for melons with bright sunny yellow skin. Avoid any that have dull white skin. When Orange Candy Melon is cut, it should be juicy, crisp and sweet.

HOW TO STORE
Store uncut melon at room temperature. Once cut, store covered in the fridge for 2-3 days.
