Dave's Market Update
In Fruit
“On the fruit side, a little less activity then vegetables , Southern Imperial mandarins are building up in volume in the markets as we hit the sweet spot in the Australian citrus season. The imperfect line is smaller in size but eating beautifully - real value this week!
Cosmic Crisp apples start this week, available in all stores. A great apple at the start of its season. Imperfect Pink Ladies are in good supply and eating as well as ever and on a great price in all stores this week.
Make the most of the short USA cherry season. This will be the last week of these reasonable prices before the season tapers begins off.
Seedless melon has been expensive, but pricing looks to ease over the next few days. Watch this space.”
In Veg
“The mild start to the season means strong volumes are still coming out of both the south and the Sydney basin, while Bowen in North Queensland is firing as the winter vegetable bowl it always is at this time of year.
Loose Corn and red capsicums are this week's standouts, both out of Bowen. The corn is one of the gold sweet varieties - kernels that are sweet, juicy, and full of flavour. If you have got kids at the table this week, this is the one.
Red capsicums are in abundance. We are selling premium red caps at a price you will only see a handful of times during the year. Both are on special in all stores this week - do not walk past either of them.
Also out of Bowen: imperfect tomatoes, zucchini, and imperfect eggplant. Do not let the word imperfect put you off. The quality and flavour are perfect. The tomatoes run a touch smaller than our premium line and the eggplant has some skin markings from windy conditions in the growing area. Eat both blind and you would never know the difference.
From central New South Wales, the Hillston brushed potatoes are outstanding this week. Grown in the rich fertile red soil of that region, they are some of the finest brushed potatoes we produce; brilliant for chipping, baking, or mashing. On special in all stores! The 2kg Kestrel is also at a great price for those who prefer the washed varieties.
Sydney basin growers are experiencing a flush this week; kale, rhubarb, silver beet, Lebanese cucumbers, and continental parsley are all well priced and in strong supply. Plenty of cauliflower, loose beetroot, and baby broccoli in the markets too.”
