Dave's Market Update
In Veg
"Fairly slim pickings in this category this week. Itβs so cold nothing much is growing. As always, there are a couple of exceptions. We do have some very good value soup packs in all stores.
Loose beetroot is still very reasonable as are all capsicums. In the NSW stores, we have a good line of continental parsley and some baby Cos that is fantastic. Imperfect zucchini and imperfect Kumera are both still very inexpensive.β

In Fruit
βThe big news thisΒ week is the big drop in blueberries as the Coffs Harbour crops get underway. They are eating superblyΒ and will only get cheaper, weather permitting.
Nets of navel oranges are fantastic value and with a couple of frosts on the fruit sweet as honey.
Both Ruby grapefruit and the imperfect fruit are really good and cheap. Bananas, apples and mandarins continue at similar low prices to what they have been selling for.
Avocados are now being harvested further south in Queensland and this fruit is generally far more reliable than the Bundaberg fruit and is also coming down in price."

Dave's Pick of the Week - New Season Blueberries
βIn recent weeks, these berries have been quite expensive, but due to a supply increase we are getting into some excellent eating varieties - the fruit from the North Coast (around the Coffs Harbour and Bryon Bay regions) is eating particularly well. It is shaping up to be a huge blueberry season, and there is an expectation of record yields which is great news for consumers.
Blueberries are roundish in shape, about the size of a marble. They are deep in colour, ranging from blue to maroon to purple-black, and feature a white-gray waxy "bloom" that covers the berry's surface and serves as a protective coat. It has a bluish flesh and contains very small seeds. They were once known as βstar-berriesβ because of the star-shaped calyx on the top of their heads. They are totally edible - seeds, calyx and all.
Blueberries are an excellent source of natural sugars for energy. The darker the colour, the sweeter they taste. They also have heaps of vitamin C and dietary fibre.β

HOW TO PICK
Select firm, plump berries that have a natural light blue-silver blush on the skin (this blush is a natural protective wax coating) and avoid soft or withered berries.
HOW TO STORE
Store in the fridge and don't wash berries until right before eating. For better tasting berries, always pull them out of the fridge half an hour before eating them.
