The Murcott is one of the more intensely flavoured mandarins in the range. Smaller and firmer than an Imperial, with a rich, deep sweetness and a slight tartness that gives it real character. Once you have tasted a good Murcott, the blander varieties feel like a compromise.
Murcott mandarins are at their best from June through August when cooler growing conditions bring out their full sweetness. That is the time to buy them.
Look for mandarins that feel heavy for their size with firm, slightly pebbled skin and a deep reddish-orange colour. Avoid any that feel light or have started to dry out. They keep well in the fridge for up to two weeks.
Eat them fresh as a snack, segment over a salad, or squeeze into a dressing. The Murcott is worth seeking out when it is in season.
