The gold kiwifruit is a step above the green. Sweeter, softer, and with a tropical depth of flavour that makes it genuinely hard to put down. Where the green is tangy and bright, the gold is mellow and rich, with a smooth, almost honey-like sweetness that works beautifully on its own or in anything that calls for fresh fruit.

Gold kiwifruit from New Zealand are at their best from April through June when the new season fruit arrives at peak flavour. That is the window to buy them.

Look for kiwifruit that give slightly to gentle pressure, indicating they are ripe and ready to eat. If they are still firm, leave them on the bench for a couple of days. Avoid any that feel very soft or have damaged skin.

Eat them halved and scooped with a spoon, slice into a fruit salad or pavlova, blend into a smoothie, or serve alongside soft cheese for a simple dessert.
