The white Nashi pear is one of the most distinctive fruits in the store. Crisp, juicy, and refreshingly mild with a clean sweetness that is closer to a very good apple than a conventional pear. Unlike western pears, it is eaten firm, not ripened to softness, which makes it one of the most satisfying and lowest-maintenance fruits you can buy.
Nashi pears are available from late summer through autumn, typically from February onwards, when Australian orchards are harvesting at their best. That is the time to look for them.
Look for Nashis that are firm and smooth with no bruising or soft spots. Unlike western pears, a firm Nashi is a ripe Nashi. They keep well in the fridge for weeks without losing quality.
Eat them fresh as a snack, slice into a salad, cut into sticks for a lunchbox, or use in a Korean-inspired marinade where the natural enzymes help tenderise meat beautifully.
