Kiwi berries are the miniature version of the kiwifruit, and they are genuinely one of the most charming things on the shelf. No bigger than a large grape, smooth-skinned, and eaten whole. Inside, the same emerald green flesh and sweet-tart kiwi flavour, just in a completely snackable format.
Kiwi berries are available from late summer through autumn when the small crop from cool-climate growing regions is at its best. Their season is short, so buy them when you see them.
Look for berries that are plump and firm with smooth, unblemished skin. They ripen quickly once harvested, so eat within a few days. Store in the fridge.
Eat them whole as a snack, fold into a fruit salad, add to a pavlova or yoghurt bowl, or use as a garnish where something visually striking is called for.
