Imperfect large avocados at a better price. They might be a little uneven in shape, carry a surface mark, or sit outside the cosmetic grade, but cut one open and the same creamy, rich Hass flesh is there. The difference is on the outside, not the inside.
Avocados are available year-round, but large Hass are at their most flavourful and creamy from autumn through winter when the oil content is highest. That is when an imperfect large avocado represents the best value on the shelf.
Look for avocados that give slightly to gentle pressure all over. Avoid very firm rock-hard fruit or anything that feels mushy. If still firm, leave on the bench for a day or two. Once ripe, store in the fridge.
Spread on toast, fold through a salad, dice into guacamole, or slice over a grain bowl. All the eating quality at a better price.
