Pick of the Week - Imperfect Corella Pears

“Like most of Australia’s pears, our Corella Pears come from the Goulburn Valley. They are a smaller, sweeter pear that are a fantastic addition to your cheese plate! The only reason that some are Imperfect is because they don’t have the full red blush that premium pears of this variety have, usually because they have come from a shadier part of the tree.

They will keep well in the fridge and should be eaten a little soft to enjoy the full, sweet, flavour they are known for.

We have a mixture of premium and imperfect Corellas on special in all our stores this week. You will rarely see them as cheap as we have them this week in our stores!”

- David Harris

HOW TO PICK
Corella pears ripen quickly, once they start developing a touch of yellow they will be ready to eat in a day or two.

HOW TO STORE
Store at room temperature in a fruit bowl. When they start to ripen store them in the fridge to prolong their life. Doing this should see them last 3 to 4 days.

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“This week is a good week for both fruit and veg. A couple of staples this week, broccoli and prepack carrots are great value, cheap and top quality. As well, we have excellent imperfect gourmet tomatoes on a very good ticket company wide.

Iceberg lettuce remains inexpensive and as well, we are seeing bargains in NSW in midi cos. Telegraph cucumbers are still inexpensive. So with this glorious autumn weather we are enjoying, it appears that your salads are sorted.

Hand-picked beans are cheap again and by the weekend, I think they will be on special. NSW stores have a real bargain with Dutch cream potatoes, all new season Thorpdale spuds and great value.

In all, a good week for vegetables."

- David Harris

In Fruit

“It’s really Autumn now and we have the best of Autumn fruit in store. Firstly, with pears this week we have Corellas on special, a wonderful pear and we are particularly featuring the imperfects in these. They don’t have that red blush but do eat exactly the same, enjoy the bargain!

Next the best eating Fuyu fruit is now in store. It’s from Victoria and just seems to be better eating than the Qld fruit.

With apples all the varieties are now available. There are more Pink Ladies yet to start, and these will be even better than the fruit in store now. I am enjoying Kanzi and Jazz right now and for cooking, the imperfect Granny Smiths are ideal.

We are near the end of the white grapes, and I think you will have better outcomes if you choose the red variety going forward.

Imperial mandarins are still fantastic, and we are seeing a sprinkling of Qld strawberries being sold by us, we sell them as premiums which they are and are priced accordingly.”
