Papaya Red Each is a large, tropical fruit with deep salmon-red flesh, a mildly sweet flavour and a silky, soft texture that's deeply satisfying. The black seeds are edible and have a peppery bite worth trying.
Look for papaya with golden-orange skin and a slight give under gentle pressure — that's the sign it's ready. A firm papaya can ripen at room temperature over a few days. Once ripe, refrigerate and eat within two days.
Halve and scoop with lime juice squeezed over the top, cube into a tropical fruit salad, blend into a smoothie, or use green papaya shredded into a Thai-style salad.
