Pick of the Week - Blueberries

“We are about to embark on what will be the largest crop of blueberries we have seen in Australia. The prices have eased substantially this week and we will have at least two lines in all our shops this week.

Our regular berry will come from the Coffs Harbour district. These berries are a larger berry than we usually get from this area, as growers diversify into larger fruit. It eats well and it’s a great price.

Our premium fruit is at this stage mostly from Queensland from the Wamuran area. It’s bigger fruit, very sweet and we are paying the premium for size. We would normally not see these quantities and prices until July. It’s going to be an enormous season especially for the consumer. I can’t wait!!”

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“We have an excellent selection of top quality well priced winter vegetables available this week at our stores. My favourite potato is the kestrel variety, available at a bargain price in all stores. For traditional winter lines we have cauliflowers, broccolini and Brussels sprouts all available at rock bottom prices.

By this weekend, green capsicums in our NSW stores and imperfect reds in our QLD stores will be about as cheap as they get. Tomatoes continue to be cheap, the imperfect gourmets particularly, have been cheap for many weeks now.

We will also see a massive drop in Lebanese cucumbers this week that will see them fall to less than half the price they have been for the last fortnight. I feel for our farmers with the volatility that is occurring on a weekly basis in our industry.”

In Fruit

“This time of the year is when berries are at their best. The climate in southern QLD is perfect. Cool nights and dry warm days produce the best fruit. It’s hard to choose between strawberries and blueberries as to what’s best, so many of our customers have an each way bet and buy both. Both on special at all HFM stores this weekend.

Those fabulous Washington state imported cherries are even slightly cheaper this week and will also be on special this weekend. Apples and citrus are both well supplied, the navel oranges particularly are eating fantastically. This will be the last week of our G-Max avocados as we now transition to all Hass variety fruit which we move from north QLD to the Toowoomba area for our fruit.”
