DAVE'S PICK OF THE WEEK
Custard apples are my pick of the week. I have never written about this delicious fruit before. A decade ago, we had two types, Pinks Mammoth, the only one we now sell, bumpy, misshapen and super sweet. Previously, Australia grew the African pride variety, smooth and not as sweet. A highly sought-after fruit by exporters to Asia, we don’t often see large quantities of this fruit in our domestic market. They have to be soft to eat and don’t eat the skin or the seeds. This week there are plenty in the markets, and they are top quality and reasonably priced.

FRUIT
We have a couple of different lines from Queensland this week as we transition North for our products. The two lines are custard apples (something different) and rockmelon. There is a little flush of custard apples; they are well priced anda great product. If you have never tried them, please give them a go this week! Good rockmelons have started from North Queensland and the weather down the East coast is not helping sell them. You somehow do not think rockmelon when it is pouring rain, soprices are easingrapidly.With nets oforanges,we are moving from the Valencia variety to Navels, which willget sweeter and juicier every week. The loose navels are great and easing in price as well. Apples and pears are well supplied andwell-price; Iam taking home the Envy variety thisweek,they are eating particularly well.
VEG
We have some good specials in our stores this week. Brussel sprouts, although not cheap, are of outstanding value. We have good supplies of top quality, well-priced kestrel potatoes. The NSW stores have a plentiful supply of delicious imperfect eggplant. Fennel is still good value, and we are seeing new season ginger now as a viable option to the old season. It is much less expensive than the old season product. As the week goes on and into the following week, stores will gradually swap over to the new season's product.
