Pick of the Week - Yess Mangoes

“My pick this week is a new variety of Mango. It’s been named YESS and yes you should try them.

It’s actually a cross between two very old varieties. One is our favourite KP which have been in Qld for a 100 or so years (often then referred to as a Bowen special) and the other is the Irwin. Irwin’s eat very well and were first seen in the United States in the 1930s. Not commonly found in Australia but a very good eating piece of fruit.

The result of this cross is a beautifully coloured sweet fleshy piece of fruit. What we are offering this week is very timely as the Katherine KP’s come to an end and I am certain you will see and enjoy this variety in the future, particularly any season we have a gap between Katherine in the territory finishing and QLD KP commencing.”

In Veg

“Glorious weather is allowing vegetable supplies to continue to be top quality and plentiful. At HFM, we continue with absolutely superb eating, top quality snacking tomatoes that are also great for salads and cooking.

In the cucumber category, telegraph cucumbers and baby cukes continue to be great value and to round off the salad offer, iceberg lettuce is easing in price.

Radish and shallots are both excellent buys and for main meal vegetables, both cauliflowers and broccoli are easing in price.

If you have never tried a yellow capsicum, this is definitely the week to try them. They are by far the least expensive of all caps, very sweet eating and top, top quality. Basically, no vegetables are really expensive, quality is excellent in all categories, enjoy the bargains.”

In Fruit

“A few real standouts in the fruit category this week include mangoes where we are focusing on a new variety that I think will be a significant player in the category. As well, seedless watermelon supplies are very strong and by this weekend we will have melons available at $1.00 kg.

Hass avocados are in strong supply especially the smaller sizes. Peaches, nectarines and cherries are all now well underway. White grapes from Australia are now moving into the better eating varieties, dear but good. For reds, we are still using imports.

Berries are still good value; probably the best value is blackberries. I am enjoying fresh Valencia orange juice, it’s the Aussie summer orange. You do get a few seeds which the younger generation have an aversion to, it doesn’t worry us seniors. By next week, the stone fruit (especially cherries) category will be full steam ahead.
