Pick of the Week - Limes

" It happens every year mid-January. Lemons grown in Australia become very scarce during this month and in February and so we rely on the United States for supply, as lemon consumption has grown dramatically in the last decade.

Mother Nature is clever because she then has limes in abundance to replace the lemons. All Australian, fantastic limes. They will be much cheaper than the imported lemons and even half the price of imperfect lemons over the next month. Don’t pay more than you need to substitute an Aussie lime for an imported lemon. "

– David Harris

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“Again, this week, our focus will be on fruit more than vegetables. That said, we do have some excellent options in veg. Iceberg lettuce are top quality and inexpensive. Broccoli is falling in price and may well be on special by the weekend.

Company-wide, we will have a fantastic special on Pre-pack corn for the weekend. Asparagus is still excellent quality and inexpensive, imperfect zucchini are great value.
As well, all stores have a snacking tomato really cheap and of course this weekend will be the main weekend for purchasing Christmas trees.

The weather is great and we have top quality salad and other vegetables to go with that.”

In Fruit

“Another fantastic week for fruit. Mainland cherries seem to have missed last week’s ferocious storms and the quality and price are really excellent. Seedless watermelon, not quite as cheap as last week is still a bargain. The wholesale price barrel covering the freight component of the growers’ expenses.
To my taste this week, yellow nectarines are the best eating peach/nectarine option we are selling and they are a fantastic price as well. Lychees, the best varieties are yet to start and I would say the same with grapes;  they are cheaper for sure but will get better eating next week.

Papaya continues to be at its best, great eating and not dear. Berries, nothing stands out to me. Limes are fantastic value. Local lemons are in short supply so switching to limes makes wonderful sense, less than half the lemon price!

I love my fresh OJ in the morning and our NSW stores have 3kg nets of Valencia oranges about as cheap as I have seen them for 4 or 5 years”
